Inlays and Onlays in Orangeville

When a cavity in the tooth is small, a composite filling is used to treat it. However, when more extensive damage or decay is present, your dentist may use an inlay or onlay.

When To Use an Inlay or an Onlay

In contrast to dental fillings that are created during the filling process, inlays and onlays must be fabricated in a dental lab. If decay is found between the two cusps of a tooth, an inlay will be used to fill the space. However, if only one cusp is affected, an onlay will be used instead.

The Use of Onlays or Crowns

Your dentist will suggest the use of an onlay, depending on the extent of the decay in the tooth. If only a small area of decay is present on the tooth’s cusp, an onlay is used to treat it. If the damage is more significant, a crown may be necessary to restore it.
